Forbidden fruit 禁果

选自《创世纪》第三章第1--5节

 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast in the field which the lord God has made. And he said to the woman,"Has God indeed said'you shall not eat of every tree of the garden'?

 And the woman said to the serpent,"we may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden;but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said,'you shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you  die'.

  Then the serpent said to the woman,'you will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.'

 

蛇比耶和华所造的田野中其他动物更狡猾。蛇对女人说；“神真说过不许你们吃园中所有树上的果子吗？”

  女人对蛇说；“园中其他树上的果子我们都可以吃；唯有园当中树上的果子，神曾说：“你们不可吃，也不可摸，免得你们死。”

  蛇对女人说：“你们不一定死，因为神知道，你们吃的那天眼睛就明亮了，你们便与神一样，能知善恶了。”

n. 蛇,蛇一般的人,狡猾的人 Examples: 1. Never cherish a serpent in your bosom.    永远不要施恩于忘恩负义之人。 2. The serpent fascinated its prey.    蛇用目光吓住了它的猎物。 3. But the misfortunes of their children still weighed upon their minds; And one day Cadmus exclaimed, "If a serpent's life is so dear to the gods, I would I were myself a serpent." Define lest:      : for fear that —often used after an expression_r denoting fear or apprehension

conj. 惟恐,以免 prep. 唯恐,以免 Examples: 1. They spoke in whispers lest they should be heard.    他们低声说话，唯恐被别人听见。 2. I got up early lest I (should) miss the train.    我早起以免错过了火车。 3. We talked in a low voice lest we should wake the baby up.    我们小声说话以免吵醒婴儿。 4. Hide it lest he (should) see it.    把它藏起来免得他看见。

 

Forbidden fruit 的意思是禁果，现代人常以禁果比喻渴望得到但不能，或很难得到的事物。或很想做但明知不应该或做了会受到惩罚的事情。现代文学中也经常以“偷食禁果”来暗喻年轻男女间发生性行为。在语言运用中通常可以理解为因被禁而更想得到的东西。我们来造个句子感受下：

 

I told my son he was not allowed to eat ice-cream as he was having a cold, but he ate more than usual.

---Well, forbidden fruit tastes better; and this is especially true for kids.

 

我告诉我的儿子他正患感冒，不能吃冰激凌，但他吃的反而比平时还多。

--越是不让就越想要，小孩尤其是这样。

 

禁果的影响

　　根据魔鬼（蛇）所说，吃了禁果后，便能如上帝一样拥有分辨善恶的能力。

　　起初二人赤身露体，并不羞耻；吃过禁果后，他们害怕被看见赤身露体，便拿无花果树的叶子作衣服。

　　后果

　　根据《圣经》，在二人进食禁果后，上帝对蛇、男人及女人有以下的惩罚:

　　蛇“必受咒诅”，从此要用肚子行走及终生吃土；后裔要与女人的后裔彼此为仇，女人的后裔要伤它的头，而它则要伤她们的脚跟；(创 3:14-15)

　　女人怀胎的苦楚加增，生产时要受苦楚；要恋慕丈夫，及被丈夫管辖；(创 3:16)

　　男人则要受咒诅，要汗流满面才得糊口，直到他归了土；从此需终身劳苦才能从(田)地里得到食物，而地会长出荆棘和蒺藜(创 3:17-19)；

　　为防他们再摘取及进食生命树的果子以获永远生存，便他们赶出伊甸园；又在伊甸园的东边安设基路伯及四面转动会发火焰的剑，以把守前往生命树的道路。(创 3:22-24)

　　禁果的品种

　　关于禁果是什么水果，《圣经》中虽并无明言，但多数便认为是苹果。据多数推测，禁果可能是葡萄、无花果、香橼或小麦。
