2010-03-15 Premier Wen Wraps Up Political Sessions

The quality, rather than the quantity, of China's economic development dominated the sessions of the National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference this year. The annual meetings of the two sessions play an important role in setting China's priorities for the year. Among the top priorities this year were issues related to social welfare, including income disparity, housing prices, education and health care reform and the environment.

The two sessions concluded over the weekend. After the closing of the NPC session on Sunday Premier Wen Jiabao met with Chinese and foreign journalists and answered questions on a wide range of topics, including China's economy and role in global affairs.

What have the two sessions of the NPC and CPPCC accomplished this year? What did Premier Wen Jiabao have to say about China's priorities for 2010?

Ni hao, you're listening to  People In the Know, bringing you insights into the headline news in China and around the world, online at crienglish.com, and here on China Radio International.

In this edition of the show we'll wrap up our coverage of the two sessions of the NPC and CPPCC, and discuss Premier Wen's remarks at the closing of the sessions. So let's get started.

First we'll speak with Dr. Wang Huiyao, Director General of the Center for China and Globalization.

And after a short break, we'll talk with another scholar about China's political sessions and about Premier Wen's remarks.

Before the opening of the political sessions this year Premier Wen Jiabao hosted a web chat to get opinions from the public, a signal that China is looking for more public participation in politics.

For more on this and on Premier Wen's remarks on Sunday we go now to Professor Shawn Shieh, visiting scholar at the Institute for the International Education of Students at the Beijing Foreign Studies University.
