Creating content can be a challenge, especially a monetary one. More often than not, creators dream up amazing concepts, but then lack the funds to make that vision a reality.
This has led to the creation of a little thing called crowdfunding. Yes. Crowdfunding.
Websites such as Indiegogo, Crowdjammer, and Kickstarter have made the possibilities for content creators endless. Any individual(s) can start a campaign to try and persuade people to chip in to help make their dream a reality. Sometimes these campaigns fall short of their goals, and sometimes they exceed wildest expectations.
One successful campaign was created for a 68 year old woman named Karen Klein. Klein became a YouTube sensation when a video was posted depicting the harassment that she faced every day. Klein was working as a bus monitor for a group of middle school students in New York. One man that viewed the video decided to set up a crowdfunding campaign in order to generate funds to send Klein on a dream vacation. His goal? $5,000. After having the campaign up for exactly 1 month on Indiegogo, it had earned a whopping $700,000. This just solidified the true power of the internet and crowdfunding.
Now, not everyone can become a viral sensation, but everyone can take some smart steps when creating and promoting their crowdfunding campaign. At Digital Hollywood in October 2013, Adam Chapnick, Principal at Indiegogo along with others shared tips of the trade. Here are some impressive statistics to get you started.
1. Start with low monetary goals. Break down your campaign into different stages (i.e. production, distribution, marketing). This makes each individual piece more attainable.
2. When setting up your crowdfunding page, the more the merrier. Statistically speaking, if you have 4+ people listed as running the campaign, you will receive twice as much cash as if you set the campaign up alone. More people = higher credibility.
3. Be prepared by creating and utilizing social accounts (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) for your campaign. Including icons that link to your social pages will also statistically double your cash intake.
4. Include 10+ photos on your page. Humans are visual creatures. Give them a way to put a face to your product or service. This could yet again, double your monetary intake.
5. Once you’ve got your page set up, it’s time to socialize it. Blast that puppy out wherever you can! Reports show that people who generate 30+ social blasts for their campaign will generally bring in four times the cash of a campaign that sends out ten or less social blasts.
6. Lastly, strangers will usually start giving to your campaign when you are 20-30% from your goal. This just reinforces the necessity of proper social channels! Use your social accounts to reach out to every person that you know to get that first 70-80%.
7. Live and breathe your campaign! Look at it as your baby. Nurture it carefully until you reach your goals!
While this isn’t an all-inclusive plan on how to run your crowdfunding campaign, we’d like to think that we provided some helpful tips to get you started. Now get out there!
