  当日,饶子和主讲了“生命之美-仪态万方的蛋白质精细结构”专题讲座。他首先追忆了西南联大:“云南在南开的历史上有重要的一页,没有云南就没有今天的南开,云南的山水养活了南开,感谢云南父老。”之后九十分钟的演讲中,从SARS到禽流感、从治学到教育改革,饶子和用诙谐幽默的语言深入浅出解释着一个个科学问题,全场听众用多达二十多次的鼓掌表达心中的共鸣。
  对于二00三年引起恐慌的SARS病毒,饶子和重申与SARS病毒相关的疾病可能再次爆发,截至目前,他和他的同事仍在深入研究SARS病毒。二00三年SARS爆发期间,饶子和带领团队成功地解析出第一个SARS冠状病毒中的第一个晶体学结构,为抗SARS药物的研制奠定了重要的基础,并因此获得第三世界科学院最高奖——的里雅斯特科学奖。
  在演讲最后,饶子和勉励莘莘学子,不论从事什么职业都应当坚持,不要轻言放弃。

“现在如果SARS再来的话,我们应该不会那么害怕了。”饶子和说,现在对SARS病毒的研究已经有了突破性的进展。饶子和透露,在这些研究中,云南的一批中草药被广泛运用。“这些中草药有抑制SARS病毒的功能,现在对SARS患者进行治疗,不会再用激素了。”饶子和说。

饶子和经常挂在嘴边的一句话是“我爱科学,但科学不爱我”。1989年,饶子和在牛津大学读书的时候,开始接触流感蛋白质。“那个项目我做了两年后就开始发毛了,一点头绪都没有。我开始有些丧气,但后来一想,剑桥、哈佛等大学也都没有做出来,我并不能算是笨蛋。”饶子和说,但后来这个项目却被哈佛的一个华裔教授破解了,他对此感到很遗憾。

后来,饶子和开始做艾滋病病毒的研究。在1995年到1996年,一年之内,他分别在《自然》和《细胞》上发表了很有影响的论文。《自然》杂志称他的“艾滋病病毒及其病毒家族分子的装配模型”研究,“为抗AIDS病研究开辟了一条新的途径”。而在2005年,他的研究组在美国《细胞》杂志上发表了世界上首次解析的第一个线粒体膜蛋白复合物II的三维结构,他也因此赢得了2006年度陈嘉庚科学奖。

一般人对各种病毒避之不及,但饶子和却长期与各种病毒“打交道”。“我常常在想,是应该消灭病毒?还是与病毒和平共处?我觉得后者更符合自然发展规律。”饶子和说。

“昆明对南开有恩”

南开每年只招3000名本科生
饶子和以科研成名后,才当上南开的校长,他更看重自己的哪个身份呢?
“我首先是南开大学校长,这是我现在的主要工作;业余时间则用来继续我的科研。”“我是第六届中国科协的常委、全国人大代表、国家重大技术研究计划973专家组成员,也是蛋白质、纳米、生殖与发育研究等4个研究所专家组成员。”
作为校长,饶子和亲自给本科生上课。但他一再申明,最先给本科生上课的是清华大学的顾秉林校长。“我做得还不够。作为校长,给本科生上课的目的是推动本科教学,引起其他教授的注意,重视本科教学。”
采访中,饶子和主动提起了南开与云南的渊源,并暗示南开有意反哺云南。
当说到南开今年是否会多招云南学生时,一脸和善的他突然狡黠地笑起来:“这个……我要回校商量。当然,云南学生很不错,在各省中成绩很好,很不错。”他话锋一转说,“我特别希望南开招到那些不是死读书的、品学兼优的云南学生。其实一所大学是否适合学生,也要看学生的发展愿望。南开是一所综合类大学,更注重文化氛围,更有人文气息。南开每年只招3000名本科生,从不扩招,目的就是重视本科的教学、实验,重视本科的人文社团等特色建设。”
饶子和坦言:“我有一个梦,可以自主到各个中学招到南开最喜欢的学生。”他认为,如能杜绝不正之风,自主招生当然就是梦想的实现。但毕竟在分数面前人人平等,自主招生又怎么来确保公平、公正呢?“这是一个考验,也是当今中国高校自主招生能否发展的最大的障碍。”
在他的眼中,那些真正品学兼优的学生,可以通过其在中学的成绩反映出来。“中学老师对自己的学生最了解,即使一次高考没考好,但学生的学习是一个过程,是抹杀不了的,这可以通过自主招生来发现。”他很肯定地说,一些具有特殊专长的优秀学生、一些天才,中学老师最能发现。
正在研究云南中草药
饶子和研究生物蛋白结构。他有关艾滋病毒中的蛋白研究和发现,曾是艾滋病毒研究史上一步重要的进展;而他带领的团队还最早发现了SARS病毒中的蛋白酶结构。最近,饶子和正领导团队致力于禽流感病毒中蛋白结构的研究,一旦发现蛋白结构,找到抑制这一蛋白复制的药物,就能抑制病毒的复制。
