美国密歇根大学的凯瑟琳·柯林斯和她的同事在本周《自然医学》杂志上撰文指出，艾滋病病毒可以感染骨髓细胞，而骨髓细胞最后会转变成血细胞。她说，这种病毒在骨髓细胞中呈休眠状态。而当骨髓细胞转变成血细胞后，病毒就会被重新激活，并导致新的感染。凯瑟琳说：“如果我们能够找到一种去除这种细胞的途径，也就完成了切断潜在感染的第一步。”
近年来，减少艾滋病患者死亡几率的药物不断出现，但病人们需要终身服药，有的甚至重新被感染。这种情况显示，药物可能杀死了那些活跃的艾滋病病毒，但依然有一些病毒“躲藏”起来，一旦治疗停止，就会重新出现。
