【"Los Angeles Times" reported on May 12】 Question: Combat HIV breakthrough: new drug significantly reduced virus

U.S. researchers said today that HIV prevention is known as a landmark breakthrough in the new study, so that HIV-positive patients taking anti-AIDS drugs to the spouses and partners reduces the chance of infection 96%.

Although some studies have pointed out previously, treatment with antiretroviral drugs can slow down the virus infection patients, but the United States National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases announced new results are confirmed by these statements of the first large-scale clinical trials - but also show that the unexpected effect of this drug.

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Anthony Fauci S · said at a news conference, the study showed that early treatment of HIV infection not only beneficial to the patient's own health, but "clearly favor the greatly reduced infection in his or her partner possibility. "

This began in April 2005 clinical trials in 13 locations in 9 countries to carry out.

Raise the 1763 pairs of tests only one infected couples. These infections included 890 men and 873 women, 97% of the couples are heterosexual. Beginning of the study, all infected patients CD4 cell count - an indicator to measure the severity of infection - are between 350-550. Guidance, saying the United States before the proposed treatment when the CD4 cell count below 500, I started antiretroviral treatment, but an international guidance only when asked to wait until less than 350 treatment.

Half of the couples in the (randomly selected) infection cocktail to immediately start receiving drug therapy, the other half onto the patient's CD4 cell count dropped to 350 the following or complications occurred after treatment of AIDS. In the study, all subjects have access to safe sex guide, free condoms and sexually transmitted diseases.

Researchers, check the interim results last month, found 39 newly infected with the AIDS virus. Through genetic analysis of the virus, 28 were apparently infected by a partner, and 7 of infection due to other causes, and 4 causes the infection is not clear.

Was partner in 28 new infections, 27 were from delayed antiretroviral treatment group.

The study led by University of North Carolina Mailunkeen said, "We are very, very surprised," the rate of decrease.

Preliminary results also showed that the patients themselves but also beneficial. Research group in the delayed discovery of a group of 17 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis cases, while in the immediate treatment group, only 3 cases. Tuberculosis is a major HIV killer.

【AFP, Paris, May 12 -】 United Nations health officials and social activists, today praised the results of a global study. The results of this study showed that taking anti-AIDS drugs as early as possible can greatly reduce the infection from sexual partners at risk of HIV.

UNAIDS Executive Director Michael Bay West, said in an interview: "This is a progress to reverse the situation. I completely shocked."

Sidibe is expected that these findings will promote AIDS prevention and control strategy rethink.

He said, which requires the treatment of HIV infection as soon as the patient, especially in high-risk groups such as gay men, intravenous drug users and sex workers.

Sidibe said: "This has multiple significance." He was referring to encourage people to do HIV testing and low-cost antiretroviral drugs to speed up the spread.

World Health Organization Director General Margaret Chan said in a press release: "The findings of the study will further strengthen and support the WHO guidance will be published in July proposed to help people infected with HIV to protect their partners."
