My Visit to the
Coca-Cola Happiness
Factory
By Yunzheng Chen
May 8th, 2010 was a special day. It was Coca-Cola’s 125th birthday! It was my parents’ and my pleasure to be invited to the celebration. It was held in the Shanghai Expo’s Coca-Cola pavilion, also known as the Coca-Cola Happiness Factory. It was an awesome day. Delightfulness was definitely conveyed to all the visitors. I learned besides passing on happiness, the company’s other theme is to be eco-friendly.
The Happiness Factory is a two-story building painted in Coca-Cola red. In front of it is attached a stage with a three-story-high Coke bottle. The surface of the bottle is acutally a screen. This made their display even more outstanding among the other pavilions. The celebration was held on the stage. I totally agree with what Glenn Jordan, President of the Coca-Cola Pacific Group, said during the celebration, “Since 1886, inspiring moments of uplift and happiness everyday has been a part of Coca-Cola's DNA -- and the cornerstone of the company's success.”
There was another thing that was very impressive at the celebration. And that was Mr. Baruti. He is an African who has a special way of showing his delight for Coke. He is even famous for this. Mr. Baruti exhibited his special ability to us. First, he took a long swallow. Then, with his whole body quivering in ecstasy, he trilled “BRRRRRR!” Wow! Everyone was surprised and laughed at his demonstration. Mr. Baruti explained. “The BRRRRR sound shows the refreshment that you feel after a drink of Coke. It releases the unhappy feelings and it shows the happiness.” Exactly! That’s how I feel after I drink a refreshing Coke, especially on a hot summer day. It makes all the sad thoughts go away and all I feel is the icy taste. Later that day, while I was drinking a Coke, I tried to copy Mr. Baruti’s ecstatic display, but it came out more like “ BLELELE.” Hummm…Maybe it is Mr. Baruti’s SPECIAL ability! Hee-hee.
After visiting the Happiness Factory, I learned that the Coca-Cola Company is being very eco-friendly. I even tried their new product: Coke contained in the Plant Bottle. The bottle is up to 30% plant-based and 100% recyclable. There is a shop in the Happiness Factory selling a T-shirt made with five recycled Coke bottles. It sounded unbelievable to me at first, but the seller explained, “ The material of the T-shirts are 50% polyester fiber and 50% cotton . The polyester fiber was taken from the recycled bottles.” I thought that was so cool that I bought one for a souvenir. The “ 5 in One” logo was printed on the shirt. Being eco-friendly is an important step to saving earth. The “5 in One” T-shirt will always remind me to be environmentally-conscious.
Time flew by and all too soon, my visit to the Coca-Cola Happiness Factory was at an end. It was really a pleasure to be there and one I shall never forget. My family and I are grateful to Coca-Cola for the invitation. I learned how important it is being content and eco-friendly. I will always try to pass on happiness and energy to people around me. Though the visit has ended, the happiness will never stop!
