28 December 2010, UNAIDS said that Sri Lanka's actual number of HIV infections is much higher than official figures. However, the existence of discrimination against HIV and AIDS stigma become the primary problem. In addition, migrant workers and civil war after the cessation of the movement of large quantities of lead to the phenomenon of rising HIV infection rates also need to get attention.
Sri Lanka HIV prevalence is relatively low, but significantly lower than the official statistics, the actual infection.
UNAIDS noted the existence of the Sri Lankan social stigma of AIDS, infected people do not want to disclose their status, not even detected, so accurate statistics are difficult. Sri Lanka, the Department estimates the number of HIV infections at least three times higher than the official figures.

In addition, UNAIDS migrant workers in Sri Lanka, the rising trend of HIV infection are also worried. According to the department this year, a report released in November, people living with HIV in Sri Lanka, more than half of all migrant workers.
UNAIDS also said the country since May last year to stop the civil war that lasted for decades, people travel and tourism is on the rise, and the resulting risk of HIV transmission must be concerned about.
