The report notes that in 2008 approximately 33.4 million worldwide (3110-3580 million) HIV-infected, 270 million (240-300 million) emerging infections, 200 million people (170-240 million) died from AIDS. Of these, about 43 million (24-61 million) of newborns infected with HIV, 15 children under the age of the total number of HIV-infected persons reached 2.1 million (120-290 million); young people among all adults (aged 15) New 40% of infections.
From a regional view of the AIDS epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa is the AIDS epidemic of the most serious regional focus of all the world's HIV infections, 67% and 15 new infections for children under the age of those 91%. However, since 2001, "United Nations Declaration of Commitment on AIDS," since the signing of sub-Saharan Africa the number of new HIV infections has declined in the past eight years, about 15%, in 2008 the number of new infections has dropped by about 400,000.
Because patients receiving antiretroviral treatment can live longer, coupled with population growth, the current number of HIV-infected persons more than ever, but as more people receiving treatment, the number of deaths of AIDS-related illnesses in the past five years declined by 10%. UNAIDS and WHO estimates that since 1996, since the advent of effective treatment programs, saving about 2.9 million lives.
According to the report published by the Global AIDS treatment point of view, the recent one-year the number of people treated increased by 36%, 5 years, an increase of 10 times. Among them, the end of 2008, middle-income countries have more than 400 million people living with HIV and patients treated, high-income countries, some 70 million people have been treated, thus, the global AIDS treatment for at least the total number reached 4.7 million. From the prevention perspective, in 2008 the world's acceptance of treatment to prevent mother to child transmission of HIV antibody-positive pregnant women from 2007 the proportion of 33% to 45%.
Despite the global AIDS prevention and control work significant progress, but the global average treatment coverage remains low. In 2008 in a demand for treatment of HIV infected persons, only 42% of people had been treated, in low-income countries in need of treatment, only 38% of the children can be treated. Latest data show that less than 40% of young people to master the basic knowledge of AIDS, less than 40% of HIV-infected persons aware of their infection status. In addition, the number of new infections are continuing to exceed the number of people treated, according to statistics, whenever there are two people starting treatment, there are five people are infected with the virus.
In 2008, the world's estimated 15.6 billion U.S. dollars for AIDS prevention and treatment. UNAIDS estimates that in 2010 this demand will rise to 250 billion U.S. dollars.
