新华社与国内外知名媒体将在"国际儿童日"开展联合报道

新华网北京10月9日电（记者张宗堂、孙承斌）新华社将会同国内外知名媒体，在11月20日“国际儿童日”当天，联合开展一场24小时全球报道活动，旨在更广泛地引起国际社会对儿童生存环境的关注，有益于儿童健康成长。

世界媒体峰会执行主席、新华社社长李从军在峰会开幕式上作上述表示。他在题为《媒体的社会责任和公益使命》的演讲中，重点强调了媒体应更好地履行社会责任，完成公益使命。

儿童是人类的未来和希望，儿童的安全、生存和发展是人类进步的先决条件。根据联合国儿童基金会发布的《2008年世界儿童状况报告》统计，2006年全球有970万名5岁以下儿童死于痢疾、肺炎等可预防疾病。其中，超过半数的儿童因营养不良而死亡。另据统计，目前世界上仍有约4250万名儿童无法饮用清洁用水，每年有约150万名5岁以下儿童由于缺乏清洁饮用水或者基础卫生设施而死亡，全球约有250万名15岁以下儿童感染了艾滋病病毒。

此外，贫穷、战争还使成千上万的儿童失去了受教育的权利。据国际劳工组织统计，全世界大约有1．88亿年龄在5岁至14岁的儿童在条件恶劣的农村、危险的工厂、矿井中工作。另外，全球超过30万儿童被迫成为士兵。过去10年中，各种武装冲突还造成全球200万儿童丧生，约600万儿童严重受伤或致残。
