今日，The Times Higher Education/QS （泰晤士报高等教育与QS；注意Times Higher Education 实质上与Times（英国《泰晤士报》）并不是同一个媒体，但大家都这么翻，我也将就了）发布了2009年世界大学排名。
前几次发布我在博客上专门写过文章点评这个排名（参见博文世界大学排名听谁的？ ）。我的主张是，看任何大学排名，一定要看这个排名的指标包含哪些，只有搞清楚了排名的指标，才能理性地看待排名。这个排名有超过50%的指标是主观指标（由各大学及雇主填写调查问卷），即此排名相当于世界大学声誉排名。在2007年，这个排名将北大排为全球第14名，引来一片哗然。2008年北大降落到36名，2009年变成52名。拿北大来说，虽然在国内名声很大，很多老外也听说过，但大学竞争力的核心---学术水平却是排在全球200名左右的。所以这个排名对美国的大学比较吃亏，因为美国大学太多（4000多所），能让全世界人民都知道的毕竟是少数，但不管怎样，即使拿大学名气说事，进入全球100名的大学，美国仍有36所。澳洲（40所左右）和英国的大学（200所左右）相对美国要少太多，于是澳洲和英国的大学经常拿这个排名说事。

- 20 percent is based on a per capita analysis of citations of research conducted by faculty members at each university. This provides an indication of “the density of research excellence on a campus,” Times Higher says. （大学教授论文被引用比例，权重20%）
- 20 percent is based on faculty-student ratio, to provide “a sense as to whether an institution has enough teaching staff to give students the attention they require.” （师生比例，权重20%）
- 5 percent is based on the percentage of international faculty members.（外籍教授比例，权重5%）
- 5 percent is based on the percentage of international students. （国际学生比例，权重5%）
- 40 percent is based on a worldwide survey of academics, who are asked to name the 30 institutions they consider the best in the world.（采取调查问卷的方式，由各大学列出全球最好的30所大学，权重40%）
- 10 percent is based on another international survey – this one of employers of graduates.（毕业生雇主的反馈，也采用调查问卷的形式，权重10%）
