2006年1月，摄影家乔纳森·托洛夫尼克（Jonathan Torgovnik）去东非拍摄了一组和人体免疫缺损病毒/艾滋病病毒的报道，这也是艾滋病被确认之后的第25年。在卢旺达，他遇上了玛格丽特，一位当年的幸存者，怀孕并且也染上了人体免疫缺损病毒。

于是摄影家在记录这些悲剧的过程中，希望以超越摄影的方式完成职业生涯中最为严峻的任务。于是他和朱尔斯·谢尔（Jules Shell）一起筹建了一个卢旺达基金会，一个非赢利的组织，以便给种族灭绝所带来的悲剧提供一些援助。
