美国大学JD和LLM的区别

   大家好:目前计划去美国读法律的学生很多,但是学生有个误区,美国法律是没有学士学位的,未来进入法学院申请JD,学生必须有学士学位的,对本科专业也没有限定,建议选择:

  1. legal studies
  2. 社会学
  3. 经济学
  4. 统计学
  5. Oral argumentation

等等..............此外本科阶段,针对进入法学院,Academic advisor在选课方面也会给学生指导。

爱荷华大学的介绍:

Requirements
Applicants for admission to The University of Iowa College of Law must complete all requirements for the baccalaureate degree before beginning law school. In addition, the baccalaureate degree must be earned from an undergraduate institution that is accredited by an agency recognized by the Department of Education.   This requirement is in line with standards that are set by the College of Law's primary accrediting agency, the American Bar Association.

Fulfillment of the basic requirements does not guarantee admission. The College of Law Admissions Committee selects applicants it deems best able to help the College fulfill its primary mission.

The services that College of Law graduates are called upon to perform are so varied, and the possible fields of endeavor are so broad and diverse, that the college prescribes no uniform undergraduate program for those planning to enter law school. With the assistance of faculty advisers, each student should develop an undergraduate program that explores and develops that student's particular intellectual interests.

美国大学JD和LLM的区别

This is a brief comparison of the primary differences between JD and LLM degrees. Comprehensive details about each degree can be found in the JD or LLM areas of this site.

The JD Degree

The Juris Doctor (JD) degree is required to practice law in the United States. It is considered the first degree in law. The JD degree is offered by American Bar Association (ABA)-approved law schools, by law schools that are not ABA-approved, and by many Canadian law schools.

·         A bachelor's degree is required for admission into a JD program.

·         ABA-approved law schools and Canadian common-law law schools require applicants to take the LSAT for admission into a JD program.

·         The JD program is generally a three-year full-time academic program.

·         All US states accept graduation from an ABA-approved law school as meeting that state's education requirement for eligibility to sit for the bar examination.

The LLM Degree

The Master of Laws (LLM) degree is considered an advanced law certification that has global credibility. LLM programs offered by US and Canadian law schools are desirable for international students who wish to gain global credentials and for JD graduates who desire advanced legal study.

·         A first degree in law is required for admission into an LLM program.

·         It is not necessary to take the LSAT to apply for an LLM program.

·         Most LLM programs do require an English proficiency test score for international applicants whose native language is not English.

·         The LLM program is generally a one-year, full-time academic program.

·         Earning the LLM degree does not qualify international lawyers to sit for the bar exam of every US state or Canadian province.

如何选择有LLM的法学院

·         What does LLM stand for?
LLM is derived from Legum Magister, which means master of laws in Latin.

·         What courses comprise the LLM curriculum?
The LLM curriculum varies depending on the program. Many programs provide a broad curriculum in American law, international law, and comparative law. Others provide more specialized courses in subfields such as taxation, intellectual property, human rights law, or international environmental law. Some programs incorporate required courses; some do not.

·         How long does it take to earn an LLM degree?
Typically, the LLM is a one-year course of full-time study or two years of part-time study. It can range from 22 to 28 or more credit hours.

·         Do applicants have to take the LSAT to apply for an LLM program?
The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) is not required for LLM admission. Many schools do require applicants to submit an English proficiency exam (TOEFL/IELTS) score.

·         How does an LLM degree differ from a JD degree?
The LLM is an advanced academic degree in law (as opposed to a professional degree in law, such as the Juris Doctor, or JD). Because the LLM is a graduate degree, one must first obtain a degree in law as a prerequisite for the LLM. The Juris Doctor is the basic law degree necessary to practice law in the US. No previous law degree is required for a JD.

·         Do applicants have to have a JD before applying to an LLM program?
US-educated applicants must have a JD degree before applying to an LLM program. Internationally educated applicants do not have to have a JD before applying to an LLM program, but must have a first degree in law from their country of origin.

·         Do all law schools offer LLM programs?
Not all law schools offer LLM programs, and some schools offer programs for domestic students only. Check with individual law schools for information about policies affecting students from countries outside the United States.

·         Can internationally educated applicants with an LLM degree take the bar exam?
Each of the 50 states in the US sets its own criteria for bar admission in that state. Earning the LLM degree does not qualify international lawyers to sit for the bar exam in every state or to practice law in every state. Most states in fact have very strict limitations on non-US lawyers' eligibility to take their bar exam. International lawyers are responsible for contacting the appropriate state's Board of Law Examiners directly to obtain specific information. The website of the National Conference of Bar Examiners links to an alphabetical listing by state of US bar admission offices.

·         Is financial assistance available for international students pursuing an LLM degree in the US?
Non-US citizens are not eligible for federal or state funding for study in the United States. However, some law schools may offer full or partial scholarships to international students. Check each school's website for more information. Some universities may offer graduate teaching assistantships. International students are advised to contact various employers, government agencies, foundations, and organizations within their own country to inquire whether any scholarship or grant aid is available for studying outside of their country.
