联合国毒品和犯罪问题办公室23日在纽约联合国总部发布的《2011年世界毒品报告》指出，注射吸毒者中艾滋病毒的全球平均流行率估计为17.9%，也就是说，近五分之一的注射吸毒者携带艾滋病毒。这意味着，全球有280万注射吸毒者呈艾滋病毒阳性。
报告指出，2010年，全球罂粟种植面积为约195700公顷，较2009年有小幅增加。主要种植面积(约123000公顷)位于阿富汗，该国的种植趋势保持稳定。
报告指出，据毒品和犯罪问题办公室估计，全世界有约1200万至2100万人使用阿片剂，其中约四分之三的人使用海洛因。2009年，全球估计1200万至1400万海洛因使用者消费了约375吨海洛因。欧洲和亚洲仍是全球主要的消费市场，其消费主要由阿富汗鸦片供应。
报告指出，尽管近年来美国的可卡因市场已有显著萎缩，但仍是最大的可卡因市场，其可卡因的消费量估计达157吨，相当于全球消费量的36%。第二大可卡因市场是欧洲(特别是西欧和中欧)，消费量估计达123吨。
